If this is your first time ordering semen straws from Holt Creek Jerseys, please read the following tips to make your first ordering experience successful:
- Plan ahead! Don’t wait until the last minute to order. The months of May and June are extremely busy times for shipping. If you wait until the week before you need to breed your cows, you might not receive your straws in time. 3-day holiday weekends can also delay shipping. It is best to order your semen well in advance of when you will need it to avoid delays and make sure you can breed your cows on time. - Have a storage tank ready! Whether you will be storing the semen yourself or having an AI tech, a neighbor or your veterinarian store it for you, make sure the tank is available and fully charged with liquid nitrogen BEFORE you place your order. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THE SHIPPER TANK FOR STORAGE! Shipper tanks, or “vapor tanks” only contain enough refrigerant inside them to keep semen frozen for a few days. If you leave the straws in the tank, they will likely thaw and kill the sperm. The best practice is to transfer the straws into a storage tank as soon as they arrive. Once they do arrive, and you have transferred them from the shipper tank to the storage tank, don’t forget . . .
- Do not return the shipper tank! The shipper tanks are issued with a call tag, and the shipping charges that you pay cover both the outgoing and return shipment. The delivery driver will return to pick up the shipper tank in a day or two. If the delivery driver does not return within a couple of days, contact us and we will have the call tag reissued. Do not take the shipper tank to UPS, FedEx, or anywhere else to return it or it has a high chance of getting lost in transition.
